Landmines and unexploded ordnance pose a significant threat to areas of land contaminated by these indiscriminate devices. This contamination can dictate the environmental consequences as the entire suspected area must be painstakingly cleared both above and below ground.
Worldwide the exact amount of land contaminated is unclear, however, estimates suggest an area the size of Germany and France combined is denied to indigenous rural populations due to significant contamination by mines and unexploded ordnance.
This contamination reduces any one areas ability to produce consumables, for example, there are many vineyards, fields and forests that cannot be used due to this contamination. The denied use of this area affects the local community directly.
In summary areas denied through contamination by mines and unexploded ordnance will continue to present an imminent risk to life, but also a risk many will accept based on the necessities of economic survival. Be it the farmer working the land who may hit a bomblet below the surface actively trying to feed his own family or his community!
